Use the NHS App to contact us and manage your healthcare
The NHS has recently updated the NHS App to make it easier to use. Some things have moved, but you can still do everything you could before.
The updated app has a new home screen and simpler navigation, with three main areas: Home, Messages and Profile.
You can use the NHS App to:
- Contact us about a medical problem or send an admin request through Anima.
- Order repeat prescriptions.
- View test results, appointment notes and other health information.
- Read messages from us and other NHS services.
- Find NHS services.
- Manage health services for a child or someone you care for, where access has been agreed.
- You can use the NHS App on a smartphone or tablet. You can also access the same services through the NHS website using a computer, smartphone or tablet.
Contact us through the NHS App
During our opening hours, you can use the NHS App to send us a non-urgent medical or admin request through Anima.
In the NHS App, this option appears under Book an appointment. This does not mean you are booking an appointment directly. It is another way to send us an Anima request, in the same way as using Anima through our website, calling the practice or coming to reception and speaking to a member of our team.
Whichever route you use, we will record your request in Anima. Our triage team will then review it and decide the most appropriate next step.
To send a request through the NHS App:
- Open the NHS App and select Appointments from the home screen.
- Select Book an appointment.
- Select Ask about a health problem (Provided by Anima).
- Follow the on-screen steps to open Anima and send your request.
Although the option is called Ask about a health problem, you can use Anima to contact us about a non-urgent medical problem or send an admin request.
Please include as much relevant information as you can. This helps our triage team understand what you need and decide the most appropriate next step.
Please use one route only
Please use one route for each issue.
If you send your request through Anima in the NHS App, there is no need to submit the same request through our website, call us or visit reception as well.
Sending the same request in more than one way creates duplicate work and may delay our response.
Other ways of contacting us remain available. If you cannot use the NHS App or our website, you can call us or visit reception, and our team will help you.
What happens after you send a request?
Our triage clinicians will review your request and let you know what happens next.
Depending on what you need, we may:
- Send you advice or information.
- Arrange an appointment.
- Direct you to another suitable service.
- Ask you for more information.
We may reply through the NHS App or contact you by phone or text message.
Turning on NHS App notifications will help make sure you do not miss our reply.
Order repeat prescriptions
You can use the NHS App to request medicines that are already listed as repeat prescriptions.
To send a request:
- Open the NHS App and select Prescriptions from the home screen.
- Select Request a repeat prescription.
- Check the pharmacy you would like the prescription to be sent to.
- Select the medicines you need.
- Review your request and follow the on-screen steps to submit it.
- You can only request medicines that are already shown on your repeat prescription list. If a medicine is not listed, or you need to ask a question about your medication, please contact us using Anima, by phone or at reception.
Please allow the usual processing time before contacting your pharmacy or collecting your medication.
You can still use a paper prescription request if you need to.
Find your health information
The new NHS App home screen brings your services and health information together in clearer sections.
Depending on the information available in your record, you may be able to view:
- Prescriptions.
- Appointments.
- Test results.
- Vaccinations.
- Health conditions.
- Allergies and adverse reactions.
- Documents.
- Appointment notes and other updates.
There is no longer a separate GP health record section. The information is still available, but you can now find it under the relevant sections on the home screen.
Information previously described as Consultations and events is now called Appointment notes and other updates. You can find this under Appointments.
Manage health services for someone else
Family and carer access allows you to manage some NHS services for a child or someone you care for. This is sometimes called proxy access.
You will usually need to ask the practice to set this up first. The services you can use will depend on the access that has been agreed.
Once access has been set up:
- Open the NHS App and select Profile.
- Select Family and carer access.
- Select the name of the person you want to manage services for.
- Select Switch to profile.
- A banner will appear at the top of the screen to show that you are using the app on their behalf.
- To return to your own account, select the option to switch back to your profile.
- Depending on the access agreed, you may be able to request repeat prescriptions, view health information or use other online services for them.
Download and set up the NHS App
The NHS App is free to download from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
If you already use the NHS App, you may need to update it before you can continue using it.
To set up the NHS App, you will need:

- Enter the security code sent to your email address.
- Enter your mobile phone number.
- Enter the security code sent to your phone.
- Enter your NHS number, or provide your name, date of birth and postcode.
- Follow the on-screen steps to confirm your identity and get full access to NHS App services.
